Regroup, Review, Renew

After the economic world was turned on its axis last Fall, many companies went into a panic, circled the wagons or even headed for the hills. The smart ones regrouped, recalculated or even reorganized. Such was the case of general contractor Gerry Crawley. In fact, it could be said of his company, ARC General Contracting that they “rewound” back to the beginning.

Future Looks Sunny For Solar Energy

SunCarrier, a division of a+f GmbH, a company in southern Germany, has been researching Kansas City and the region as sites for installation of their solar technology. Marc Reimer, Head of Project Development, explained that his company has been a leader in solar technology and efficiency for six years with a new fashion of solar installation that has shown great success in Germany and Spain. They now seek to try that same technology in what he terms as “less than optimal conditions,” namely the winters of Midwestern United States.

Booking Revenue

Most people believe that once you write a book, the money comes rolling in. Not so, says David Thomson, the author of the best selling business book, BLUEPRINT TO A BILLION: 7 Essentials to Achieve Exponential Growth. In fact, the work really begins as you start to build your brand and hopefully, revenues.

There is press work to be done, interviews to arrange, working with Publishers and PR staffs, speaking engagements, websites to design, other products to develop, travel and of course, “when’s your next book coming out?” Sure, you’ve earned some credibility, maybe a little notoriety and a couple of bucks, but it doesn’t launch a multi-million dollar empire by itself.

Holliday Greetings

Marian Goppert Cooke is the owner of Holliday Furniture in downtown Billings. She is 85 and doesn’t have time to mince words. In fact, she started talking before I even had the microphones set up and didn’t stop until I was walking out the door. I think I asked about three questions. I figured she had earned the right to say anything she pleased, for as long as she pleased.

We talked (OK, she talked and I listened) for more than an hour on a wide range of subjects related to her life, the store that her family has owned for more than 50 years and the political landscape and its effect on business. I would describe her as feisty, tough, good-hearted and a computer for a brain. A real Western woman with a pioneer “survival” spirit that drove her during the tough times. Katherine Hepburn would have played her in the movie.

Boost, Not Bust

Despite news of economic woes, 70% of women presidents and CEOs of multi-million dollar companies predict their companies will maintain or grow revenues this year. This is according to the annual economic survey by the Women Presidents’ Organization (WPO), the premier peer advisory organization for women entrepreneurs.

Is this a “Pollyanna” attitude or do they know something that the national media, doesn’t?

The WPO is a non-profit membership organization for women presidents of multimillion-dollar companies. Members of the WPO take part in professionally-facilitated peer advisory groups in order to coax the ‘genius out of the group’ and grow their businesses to the next level.

Unstoppable, Rock Solid Growth

It was announced recently that a Kansas City, Kansas based Hard Rock Hotel and Casino was selected as part of the approval of legalized gaming in Kansas. This new Hard Rock location will be part of the Kansas Speedway complex.

While not everyone agrees with the strategy or the tactic of theoretically “state owned” gaming, this area will only continue its burgeoning growth as a very popular Midwest tourist and visitor destination.

The focus is on the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. I truly believe that we “ain’t seen nothin’ yet.” I don’t think we can even fathom how great this will be for the Kansas region, for the Kansas City metro and for tourism. The market force of powerful brands is literally unstoppable.
